Why are people so obsessed with these end of the world scenarios?

Like the Y2K Bug, the 06/06/06 and recently, the Mayan's prediction in 2012. Is it human nature to be obsessed with such nonsense?

The world as we know it will not be completely destroyed.  But it will be close.  Then that glorious day will come when the world will be as it was meant to be before adam and eve messed it up.  Lord i cant wait.

Maybe people are obsessed because of the unknown, or maybe they are afraid, or maybe they have way too much time on their hands.

oh and date setting is incorrect. no one knows the time when these things will occur.

they're really bored and want something exciting to happen

People actually are comforted by them. The idea of the future going on endlessly, checking into the job, living the boring life we are all forced to live in moderen society; that's the ultimate bringdown... the thrill of huge cataclysm is a counteractant to this.
