Why are people so often belittled because of their age?

A lot of people will listen and speak to you as a human being and a worthwhile person, not everyone has the age fetish.

I am amazed at people who want no contact with others that are not within 1 or 2 years of their own age - it seems crazy to me - luckily I do not have to have these people in my life.

Sometimes older people have forgotten that young people know stuff too. When I was very young, I remember adults talking kind of "above' me when they thought I wouldn't understand. But, I did understand. Sometimes adults forget that young people have feelings, opinions etc. And, because we have lived longer and have experienced more things, we think we are smarter. We aren't, we just have more experience. Cut them some slack, if they remembered what it feels like to be 13, they wouldn't treat you that way. I hope when you get older, you remember what this feels like so you can treat the younger ones with more respect. I also remember coming up with some ideas when I was your age that I thought were so awesome! It confused and angered me that my parents didn't agree. Later, I'm glad they didn't!

because they think you are amateurish, and don't know enough in life to have something important to say. It's a very sad and tragic life. I'm 12, and I happen to be the youngest in my grade and one of the youngest in the grade lower than mine. I just say what is on my mind, and make a big deal out of it. I'm a pretty good speaker, so if I make it dramatic, I tend to get listened to once in a while. Just don't whine, and you'll gain more respect and people would listen to what you say.

i think adult need a wake up call sometimes.  you'll just have to find a way or the right one. your mom or dad.

younger people (I'm 16) are often seen as having a lack of experience or knowledge. Even completely legitimate arguments put forth by the younger crowd are often discarded because they are perceived as lacking a true understanding of the world. Of course, it does hold true that some kids think they know so much more than other, and it also holds that some have very little knowledge regarding anything in general, but if you want kids to respect themselves and the other generations to follow, i think you have to start somewhere-----longest answer i've ever given

They don't pay attention when you are so young because they think you are to young to know.

When you get old they will think that you are just old, and don't matter.

well, im thirteen too, but i dont really have the same experience. i mean, sure, sometimes, but maybe its how you approach the situation. and the group youre talking to :)

also the elderly are belittled. which sucks because usually they are the wisest :)

because sometimes younger people 'think' they know everything when they haven't even experienced anything yet in their lives.

Of course it depends on what your talking about: but if I were to ask a question I would more than likely take the advice of someone over 20 verse someone who's 13

It doesn't end when you reach adulthood.  People in their 40's look down on people in their 20's.  People in their 50's will look down on people in their 30's.  Once they reach their 70's, they're back on the receiving end of it.

It's human nature to overlook what others have to offer.  Some people just want to feel more important than others.  Don't pay any mind to those who belittle you, they're the ones with the small minds.
