Why are people so shook about new Orleans?

Mississippi got hit just as hard by Katrina, wind damage was actually worse. Why does it seem that MOST people not all, are STILL complaining and whining when other people are actually working others are out stealing and waiting for the government to do something. What are your opinions and please no rude and mean answers!

Summer ... I think New Orleans is the landmark used to discuss the area hit by Katrina...it is meant to encompass all.

It is long past time to have rebuilt a life...that's for sure.

1) They built their city inside a bowl

2) They did nothing whatsoever to shore up their defenses despite 50 years of predictions of how catastrophic a direct hit would be

3) They refused to evacuate even though they had almost a week's notice allowing thousands of school buses to flood, all of which could have evacuated residents.

4) They received some of the weakest hurricane winds being on the northwest corner of the storm. The vast majority of damage to the city was caused by some relatively small breaches in the concrete levies 50 to a couple hundred feet across due to back pressure from Lake Pontchartrain.  I never saw a single resident fill a single sandbag during the flood

6) No one thought to sink a barge across the canal or take any other measures to slow the flow

7) Their mayor after failing to evacuate the city went on the radio on several occasions fanning the flames of hysteria rather than providing any leadership whatsoever.  He was re-elected despite his complete failure in this crisis.  

8) All I ever hear from New Orleans is how we all failed them and no admission that they failed themselves.

I could go on but I'm sorry I am all out of sympathy for New Orleans.  My charitable giving for the last year has entirely gone to the Mississipi and Alabama victims.

There are some "legitimate" reasons for the news media's focus on New Orleans at the expense of the other areas devastated by Katrina (not just Mississippi).

The whole world had heard of New Orleans before Katrina  but had never heard of Biloxi or Gulfport - much less Waveland. The flooding of the city-proper in NOLA was the result of bad engineering and not just a natural disaster (blaming Nature is hard). NOLA contains or supports a significant percentage of America's critical infrastructure.

However, I believe a lot of the attention is because Katrina + New Orleans is considered a "bad news" story for the Bush administration, and the global news media hates Bush. The news media is basically campaigning for the Democrat candidate in the next election and bangs the drum about NOLA as a way to hurt the Republicans.

The main reasons people talk about New Orleans are (a) because it was a major city, (b) it has been slow to rebuild as compared with other areas (like Mississippi, where people are just taking it on themselves to rebuild, as they should), and (c) As is always the case with the entitlement-minded layabouts among us, they expect the Federal Government to fix it.  Along with this, let's not forget to talk about all the people who never made it out of New Orleans because they sat on their lazy butts and expected the government to get them out of there.

Mississippi is a shining example of what America is REALLY about -- taking personal responsibility, working for a living, overcoming adversity, civic participation, helping your neighbors, and achieving success through perseverence.  New Orleans is a shining example of how liberal beliefs and policies are destroying America.  The entitlement-minded layabouts, who have been pandered to by the liberals for decades, believe the government OWES them, even though they contribute nothing to society.  They expect and demand that the government come to their rescue and throw billions of taxpayer dollars at the problem so they don't have to lift a single finger or spend one red cent out of their own pockets.

So I say let New Orleans sit just the way it is and let the Feds deal with more important issues like illegal immigration, terrorism, and getting rid of the perpetual welfare system.  If the people who live in New Orleans (or used to live there) aren't willing to tackle rebuilding The Big Easy themselves, then The Big Easy doesn't deserve to be rebuilt.

I think it's because most of Mississippi kept their heads on.  Not to mention, it was a government caused disaster in New Orleans, not a natural one.  If the levees never failed, the focus WOULD be on Mississippi.

We got overall worse damage house by house, but they got more.  because they're denser.  Their political situation was worse than ours was. (Remember Willy Nagin and his Oompa Loompas?)  We didn't have as much looting and crazy people here.

The crime from the hurricane here comes out to more dignified than steal and run.  Contractors are ripping people off everywhere.  I think the only reason that Katrina is known to hit Mississippi is because of Robin Roberts and her home town of Pass Christian.

Uh. New Orleans got hit harder.  More deaths, economic damage, not to mention it was where a lot of jazz culture began.  Not everyone is complaining, but they have the right to, because the government isn't getting the move on fast enough.  Lots of people deserve some help, but they aren't getting any.

My sentiments exactly! I make historical scrapbooks and after I saw the behavior and actions of those in New Orleans I refused to have anything to do with them!! New Orleans is the biggest disgrace this country has had to endure and even now they choose to live in shambles! I have total dislike for the whole state anymore. But I give thumbs up for what Mississippi has accomplished and gone thru watching the media swoon over their neighboring state leaving them in the cold! Mississippi shows the true spirit unlike the others!

All areas that got hit are getting a decent amount of aid from volunteer organizations. I think that people talk more about New Orleans because it is a major city and tourist destination. No major cities in Mississippi got hit, at least not any that the average American not living in the area can name.

new orleans gets more attention because it is a major city and because of the standing floodwaters for so long after the storm. i don't think it's fair to say most, but i agree many people here are not sucking it up and working to get themselves back on their feet. i especially hate all the people crying about public housing. this city can't afford to support you. if you want to live here, get a job and support yourself. new orleans has so many problems and things to put money into that freeloaders need to go burden somewhere else and not put an extra strain on this city. i too am amazed at the entitlement mentality of many here. wish i could tell you why, but i don't think anyone raised to work hard, take care of your family, and pay taxes can really understand.

props to mississippi for what they have accopmlished, can we borrow your politicians? maybe then we can get something done. mabye a bit of leadership would inspire some of the unmotivated people here.

Simple: an entire metropolitan city was destroyed, and over 1,000 people died. The cost of rebuilding just New Orleans will easily surpass the cost of rebuilding Mississippi AND Alabama combined.

BUT... you are right that the victims of Katrina in other parts of the country are being overlooked, and it is sad. What is more, four hurricanes hit Western Florida and Alabama the year before, and they are STILL rebuilding, and they are all but forgotten. New Orleans was a bigger deal, but you are right that we should not forget everyone else!

Mississippi got hit worse, but only affected a few thousand people.  The damage in New Orleans affected a lot more people and caused a lot more damage financially.  The reason people are still complaining is that many areas are still not accessible to cleaned up.  If you can figure out how they are supposed to rebuild a house with no electricity, water, or sewer working, rubble piled on the streets and yard, and in many cases to road at all in front of it is gone, then you should let those people know.  There are areas that literally still look like landfills and not residential blocks.
