Senate Republicans Block Plan to Cut Greenhouse Gases (Update2)

    By Daniel Whitten

June 6 (Bloomberg) -- Climate change legislation that would have cut greenhouse gases and helped establish a European-style emissions-credit system in the U.S. was blocked in the Senate by Republicans who said it would raise taxes and boost gas prices.

Thirty-two Senate Republicans and four Democrats opposed the legislation, which fell 12 votes short of the 60 needed to continue consideration. The vote probably killed the measure for the year, as Democrats said it may have to be shelved until after the November elections.

  4. Because it is almost always more exspencive and less effective than the old technlogy.

  5. If someone told you that jumping in a fire would reduce "greenhouse gases", would you do it? I suspect so!!

  6. People aren't interested in 'greenhouse gases' because all the talk of them is for global warming purposes.  Global warming doesn't exist...it's a big scam.  People who know this are not concerned.

  7. Humans tend to worry about what is the most important issue to them at that particular moment... When you have such a large percentage of the American public living in what I classify as 'emergency'/'survival' mode; it doesn't leave a lot of time and energy to consider the extra details of life.  Look how many people have lost their jobs, their houses, their spouses/partners due to the stress of recession...and the kids/families that have been traumatized the last few years of wartime as well.  When you have two jobs just to make ends meet, haven't seen your kids in two weeks (and want to), and have the bill collectors calling... you don't really worry too much about global warming.  (There, but by the grace of the Goddess, go I - still have spouse/house & kiddos, but many neighbors do not...)

I lay a lot of blame on our wonderful last 8 years of Republican domination...and the American apathy that got us there to begin with.  (Sorry, guys/gals, I lost a lot of respect for my neighbors in the larger community during the last decade.)

This isn't a new phenomenom.  The industrial age, reconstruction post-Civil War, workforce post WWII - when a society is going thru 'survival', that's what it is, man.  Food, family, housing....then the other stuff that makes us higher up on the hominid scale.  Art suffers support, new technologies aren't pursued due to lack of funding or even lack of inventor.

So, what did we learn today, boys and girls?  If you'd like a more advanced society that can pursue fine arts, technologies, religious pursuits, etc....  We have to have our basic heirarchal needs met first, as well as those of our family.  Then we can grow, flourish and spread our culture as all who have gone before...  Hopefully, a little wiser and greener.

  8. Well, people have "better things to do" than to follow up on global warming as well as spending money on it because the sad truth is they are all so busy.

  9. People are lazy and are slow to change. That is what our goverment likes.

  10. You have to remember that these things tend to cost More $$$ combined with the fact that we're in an economic slump and the fact of the matter is most people don't got it like that!!

  11. no idea
