What is it with people that work in recruitment? Are we just a number to them? They take ages to get back to you by email, if you're lucky, don't seem that friendly and mess you around so much. Someone please sum up the world of recruitment and how it all works? It does my head in! :-(

  1. the problem is you're the commodity. the customer for the recruiter is the company that is doing the hiring. he is only obligated to make them happy and doesnt much care about the worker as long as they complete their end of the contract. i work as a contractor and the recruiters are soulless slave traders. but i deal with that by making sure i charge the heck out of them for what i know they're getting paid for. never accept the first rate offer. if they offer you 20 an hour they're willing to go to 25. if they say no, hang up politely by saying i have a call on the other line. if you are qualified to do the job and they called you first they'll call back and try to offer you more.

  2. They must know its money for old rope so they probably feel devalued. Also, particularly when they are dealing with professional recruitment, they no doubt know the people they are recruiting are far more intelligent than they are. In my experience the qualifications for working in recruitment are - Males - stupid spiky hair and a Matalan shirt and tie - Females - an over bearing personality and a permatan (preferably bright orange).

  3. what some people don't realise is that recruitment can be very stressful. I have been in the business 14 years and its important to find the right candidates for the positions with a certain tight time scale. The only person that is going to let us down is the candidate either by not turning up for a pre arranged interview or not turning up for a job (which happens all the time!). Thus our client is let down and we get it in the neck! However this is no excuse for being rude or unprofessional. Be straight with your recruiter and ask them why they don't get back to you or messing you around. If you are still unhappy complain to their superiors as you should be getting a good service too. After all if there were no Candidates we couldn't do our job.
