Question:

Why are people willing to part with more money on sites like Ebay, but not at car boot sales?

I am an Ebay seller and can make a fair bit selling old stuff of mine. Recently I sold a Bible in very good condition for £7 on Buy It Now, and a woman from the UK bought it no problems, no complaints etc. I have also had people bid for a designer bag from me before. I did a car boot sale the other day though. I was selling many decent items, including some lovely nearly brand new pics of guinea pigs and a framed one of a dolphin which I bought a few years ago and was expensive. This guy tried to push his luck by offering me a measly 20p for it, but I told him where to go when I know I have more luck on Ebay (did car boot sale because I am not so keen on Ebay fees!). I also am wondering if people expect LESS at car boot sales around the continent; we were selling a brand new all purpose blender, and had loads of Poles wanting it for a stupid price of 50p.Why do people do this? Thanks

  1. I had to Google “car boot sale” just to figure out what it was.

It’s all about how many customers you are reaching. At one of your in-person sales, you’re limited to a few thousand potential customers at best, correct? On eBay, you have millions of potential customers all over the world; what may not be desirable in your own back yard might be in huge demand half a world away. The more customers you have, the more likely you are to find one or a few that want what you’re selling.  Since prices are fueled by competition, the more buyers you have, the higher the expected sales price.

Also at these in-person sales, buyers expect to negotiate with you. I’d certainly never attend such an event planning to pay sticker price for anything. eBay’s format doesn’t really allow for negotiations. It’s an auction rather than a barter format. You’re practically comparing apples to oranges.
