I know what it's like to have to deal with a learning disability as I have dyslexia and I have three children with Learning disabilities two of whom have dyslexia. But I would never have worried about them before the age of about 7 almost 8 when they have really learned to form their letters and when they are reading more. I think that not enough parents know child development so that when something pops up they automatically assume that the child has an LD. ON the other hand you have parents who's children have an obvious LD or other issues who choice to ingnore it so that their child isn't labeled. People please find out the real deal about special Education and please learn child development so that you're not pushing your child before they are ready and so that you're not driving your self crazy before you need to.

  1. They start worrying for  same reason that people start teaching their children while they are still in the womb. We think we want for them to be the brightest, prettiest, biggest, most athletic, etc.  It is usually when the kids are 15-16 that we realize that they are what they are and that we should have appreciated them all those years instead of stressing.

It is normal for kids to reverse their letters as they are learning.

As far as labeling, even if the kid is not diagnosed with LD they are labeled by the other kids.  It is sad, but it is the way it is.

  2. It is very normal for parents to be worried because all parents would like to expect their children to be normal and free from impairment. Who would a parent wants to have his/her young cute child to have an impairment in reading ability. Naturally all parents would want their children to be the best of what they are. Expecting your children to be learning to read or write for that matter is a an assumption drawn from their minds. Otherwise this will really cause an alarm for any ordinary parents. However, parents will really learn to accept if their children is found to be diagnosed with dyslexia. Parents will do their best to find the best teacher  in order for their children to cope up and learn the basic education in life.

There is really a need to worry -- but for every problem there is a solution.

Thanks for a your question concerning children. It is very touching and calls for a concern to the children having. dyslexia. Have a great day!

  3. I completely agree with you. This seems to occur more in parents who are making a decent income and are worried that they won't have a perfect child. Not to say this is always the case, but in my experience these kinds of folks make more demands on the school system than others.

In defense of looking for learning disabilities early; the earlier an intervention is started the better off the child will be.

I have seen a lot of normally developing kids pushed mercilessly by parents who just don't understand that there are individual differences in development.
