Will you keep flying with the Fokker 50 aircraft type?

Yes. It is currently planned that the Fokker 50 will remain in the VLM fleet well into the second decade of this century. As you are aware, the Fokker 50 aircraft is ideal for short haul distances and is very much suited for the steep approach landings at London City Airport. Furthermore the Fokker 50 is one of the most environmentally friendly aircraft, with a very low fuel consumption (3.2 litre/100km/seat), low noise emissions and low CO2 emissions (92 grams of CO2 per 100km per seat)

COMPARE THIS TO THE AVERAGE 5 Seater car having 121 to 150g/km and often only having the driver on board.

  1. it may be due to their speed ... because of which they create more noise pollution....

  2. bigger engines

  3. if cars ran on aviation fuel, then they would be even bigger poluters, baby!

  4. Well I don't see many Fokker 50's flying overhead, do you mate?

Instead I see commercial jets developing 88000 horse power and burning octane by the ton.

  5. They burn tonnes of jet fuel whereas cars burn less than one ton

  6. Notice that they give the fuel consumption as per seat.

If you calculate the same way then a car which has 5 seats.

    That means less than 30g/km/seat.

Now there is a point that cars should not be driven around empty and that car pooling and public transport should be supported.

But until we actually get decent public transport systems working we will be stuck with huge numbers of cars ferrying individuals to work and home every day.

  7. burn more fuel diffrent kind thats more toxic

  8. because the UK government are getting a bit bored focusing on the car industry, so they are moving on to planes, so they can increase the prices for that, and the fuel and everything related and then continue to bleed the uk people dry so Mr Brown of Downing Street, London and Mr Darling also of Downing Street, London can sit back and feel proud with his one eye and stupid face and Mr D with his stupid eyebrows

  9. Planes burn LOTS of untaxed fuel. As they do not want the engines to 'flame out' as they take off or land they run rich and expel unburnt fuel - rather like white van men!

Just stand near an airport and breath in the stench of 'paraffin' which lingers in the air.

You don't get that with catalysed cars!

  10. Gerrard, the answer to your question "Why are planes considered more polluting than cars?" is indeterminable.

    Who says so?

When you see statements that compare airplanes' pollution with automobiles be cautious. It is possible to prove anything statistically on issues like this.

  11. my car doesnt produce 250,000 lb of thrust.

  12. because planes consume more gas than cars

  13. Are we comparing one car against one plane here?

The emmisions of planes is far less than that of road vehicles.

Look at it this way, motorengines burn fuel less refinely and efficiently than jet engines.

Cars usually carry just one driver with all 4 seats wasted.

Cars weigh over a ton with most of this weight wasted on luxuries.

cars are effected by traffic and traffic on the roads.

Cars cause congestion and slow down journeys.

Cars taking a journey don't travel in a straight line.

Cars are slower and burn more fuel by travelling further.

Passenger jets use every available space to carry passengers.

Passenger jets are made of alliminium and composite materials.

Jet engines don't use gears and calculates a burn more efficiently.

Passenger jets travel the shortest route and don't get effected by traffic in the same way as cars.

Passenger jets burn a lot of fuel in a very short period of time, just as a car burns less fuel but in a longer period of time to reach the same destination as a plane.

The combined weight of a plane with 100 passengers is far less than the combined weight of 100 cars.

  14. let's talk about Airbus A380 Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine..

such this engine burn 1 gallon fuel in one second..

and she got 4 of Trent 900...

can imagine how many CO2 produce???

    yup, that right.. uncountable..

    is this answer your question???

  15. Point taken about this plane, but what are they flynig when they offer me Heathrow to Prague for nine pounds?  A jet.  An hour in a jet chucks out more CO2 per passenger than most family cars do in a month of typical mileage.  The CO2 is released higher in the atmosphere (Du'H!) where it absorbs more heat, which has come through less atmosphere, than the exhaust fumes of a car at ground level.
