  1. In most cases they don't!  They vote in raises for the people who will be in the following term, not the current term.


  2. In my state they do vote themselves raises and it is an absolute travesty. Just imagine if everyone could do that.

  3. Does seem odd, doesn't it? Maybe that should be actions restricted to the losers of the elections to pass?

  4. Because there is no other organization that is higher than them.

    They own the checkbook, and have to decide where to spend the money.

    Of course the idea is that every one of them is elected and therefore can be held accountable by the voters / taxpayers.

  6. Who else would have to authority to make pay raises for Congress?

    However, any vote to raise congressional pay does not take effect until after the next election and new congress.  So if you feel that your representative or senator voted for an undeserved pay raise, vote them out of office.
