Why are polka dots called polka dots?

Polka dots are not closely related to polka music, but are thought to be named after the music as they were both very much a part of British culture in the late 1900s.

maybe because the dance polka or whatever its called, from the top it looks like everyones a dot because of the skirts when they swirl
