Why are possessive partners tearing families and friendships apart?

I have noticed that partners can be very good at tearing bonds apart, why do they do it? To me it seems counter-productive. They will end up alone in the end.

  1. it is counter productive

    they are also jealous of their partners friends so they don't want their partner to spend time with friends
