Why are puppies expensive? why are kittens cheaper?

because more people like dogs than cats so they can charge more for them. and kittens are cheaper because there are more of them than dogs.

Purebred cats are costly.  

I think if you're talking about just mixed animals, the figure is that one cat and her offspring can account for around 200 cats in a couple of years.  So, there seems to be a lot of cats around and the costs go down when there is more supply verses demands.

I don't understand why people pay so much for those designer dogs.

but it makes no sence because cats are way smarter and i think they are better pets...

People aren't as intent on getting purebred kittens. Most kittens you find, are complete ''mutts'' when it comes to their breed(s).

If you find a cat breeder, you'll see that purebred kittens are actually quite costly, just like purebred puppies are.
