  1. It's not so much a matter of force as it is a matter of momentum.

When you crash a car, your body continues to have its forward moving momentum (one of Newton's Laws), that a body moving will continue to move unless interfered upon by another force.

Rather than the force being the pavement and risking flying debris and general chaos killing you, the seatbelt keeps you in the cabin in an accident (the safest place), and the seatbelt acts as the restraining force, strapping you tightly to the seat to reduce unnecessary movement that might cause you to bump into things.

Its interesting what an airbag actually does too, but that's another story.

  2. Belts work as a restraint for vehicle occupants both by keeping them in their cars during a crash and by lessening the impact of a crash.

During a crash, three distinct forces occur. The first is the force of the vehicle colliding with another object.

The second is the force of the occupant's body colliding with the interior of the vehicle.

The third is the force of the occupant's body organs colliding against the body's skeletal structure.

A seatbelt functions to stop the occupant with the car, preventing the body from continuing to travel at the car's original speed after the car has stopped.

The seatbelt also spreads the deceleration energy over the larger, stronger parts of the body, namely, the pelvis, chest, and shoulders, which are more able to absorb the energy without sustaining injury.

  3. For our safety!

  4. So you don't get tossed out of the veichal or ride an bust your silly @ss

  5. For your safety! In case of an accident you wont get ejected or get thrown into/or thru the windshield (depending on how badly the accident is).
