Why are so many Native Americans and Blacks Democrats?

Question

I am very confused on this... I went to Pow wow days in Seattle today and there were several booths promoting Obama, but nothing suppuorting McCain. How did these social groups come so far away from their roots. It's always been the Consertive Party/Republicans that stand up for and make sure they have their rights. Calvin Coolidge gave Native Americans their Citizenship. Abraham Lincoln, Freed the Slaves. They were both Republicans. Martin Luther King Jr. proclamed himself as a conservitave. Richard Nixion Signed the Indian Health Service into existence. Is all this just because I live in the Socialist Republic of Seattle or have these groups changed that much?

Personally, I don't see that the Republican party that is usually represented with a very Christian and very white face is anything to do with their roots. It's white Christians after all that were the basis of some nasty bits of history here in which Native and black people were their victims.

er... it's not always been the conservative party...

check out the word... conservative...

that means you're upholding the traditions of the past... like slavery and segregation...

by the very definitions of the words... freeing the slaves is a liberal action... rocking traditions and the way things are...

heck, the Republican party was the liberal party in many ways until the 60s... they were the most vocal against WWII... all the peace protesters... Republican...

just look at how the states voted pre-1960.. north republican, south democrat...

unless you think that the north magically became conservative and south liberal... it doesn't make any sense that the red states became blue around the 70s...

you're tying conservative with Republican... and that's just not always been true...

because the Republicans were mainly focasing on the Mexicans. plus alot of the Native Americans tend to live in Democratic states. the Blacks are mainly going Democrat in this election because of Obama. just like alot of Women are going for Obama because of Oprah

You might want to look at the actual party planks of the GOP.  They're EXTREMELY racist in regards to American Indians.   One of the actual planks of the GOP is to take away the rights of the tribes to self-government!

Why in the world would any self-respecting American Indian vote for a party that wants to destroy their nations?

The platforms of both parties have changed considerably over the years. Republicans claim to be the party of Lincoln but the platform they run today is not anything like Lincoln's. Kennedy, who was all for civil rights, economically had a lot of ideas that were fiscally conservative.  

Lately civil rights and  quality health care, which  Blacks and other minorities such as Native Americans are very concerned about, are high on the Democratic Party's issues of importance, so it is natural that they would support Obama and the Democrats. (especially since Obama has specifically mentioned he would appoint a Native to a high level position as adviser to Native affairs)

I am native American and I think it is because Republicans today don't want to help the minority groups.  Maybe it was different back then.
