Why are so many here so totally ignorant about science?

Seriously, this is very scary to me... So many people have no understanding at all about evolution, what the word "theory" means, why creationism is not another theory or even related to science in any form. I cannot believe it... its like a third world country here , educationally. No wonder they look at being president of the harvard law review as a negative..

may God save us from this ignorance.

  1. bcz science always change, are you sure its write this time?

  2. .....more proof that evolution has stopped

  3. I believe in evolution and God and there is no way in h**l I'll ever vote for Obama.

  4. Oh believe me, buddy, I've been "educated" by the liberal evolutionists. I don't find any of it to be factual or plausible. Besides, don't I have free will? Can't I decide what I want to believe in without being called ignorant? For a party of tolerance, you people are very intolerant.

Since when does supported mean confirmed?

  5. Then perhaps you can set up a website and school us 'tupids about the reality of that there sience life.  We be jus sum dumm ignirant third wurld yokels, y'all.

  6. A large percent of the posters here are obviously in their early teens - give them a break, they haven't had a real science class yet!

  7. America is under the heel of faith-based nonsense. Of course, science does more FOR them than faith...but reason doesn't play into the argument.

  8. You shouldn't even bother. Willful ignorance is their problem. Evolution is just a "theory," yet these people believe their creation "theory" with absolute certainty. Fact is, evolution is not just a "theory," as gravity is not just a "theory."

  9. Most people would not be able to define science if you asked them. They would come up with words like physics, chemistry, economics or evolution. There is a fundemental misunderstanding in our culture of what science is and is not and what its limitations are. People, Think back to your earliest science class. We learned about the scientific method with concepts like theory, as you mentioned, experiment, controll group, repeatability, having others be able to reproduce the same results. Think back to what we learned about Louis Pasteur. In the 19th. century he devised an experiment using the scientific method, that involved "S shaped flasks" The results of his experiments and subsequent ones haved "proved" , that is, shown with a very high degree of probability that life does not arise spontaneously but that living things only come from other living things: Biogenesis. The evolutionary theory has changed many times over the years, in the light of new evidence and interpretations and extrapolations of data but it remains relagated to the status of theory. It is not science but a branch of philosophy. There is no way to repeat, recreate or observe macroevolution or put it up for peer review.

  10. I see your point but the way you're going about it is wrong.

I agree that creationism is not science.  It is not the job of schools to teach my children about God.  That is my job.

That being said, by calling others ignorant for their beliefs is not very smart.

  11. They need to pay more attention in there science class man!

  12. Evolution is a theory and according to dictionary.com

"a proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural..."

So intellectual design can still be argued. I personally believe in evolution but i still have not been convinced on how the first living organism was created. Also it has never been observed that an organism evolved into to a higher life form.

  13. You probably should ask God to save you from your own lack of knowledge of theology.

There is a place for the theory of evolution in many religions which believe that an Almighty Being created the Universe.

That's what I learned and it was part of both my theology and science classes from early childhood.

I think that this is now called Intelligent Design.

There isn't any reason to be antagonistic toward people of faith.

Disparaging their beliefs fails to recognized the diversity of our culture and the backgrounds of our multi-ethnic population.

  14. If you want to discuss science and religion, there are other areas on YA for this. Here you are just another troll.

  15. Creationism and evolution are indeed both theories because no one can prove them with out a doubt.

Someone's faith in some almighty creator isn't proof. What someone else has faith in means absolutely nothing to me.

Until either can be proved 100% true or false, they are just theories.

  16. EVERYONE, and I do mean EVERYONE, should be made to watch "Inherit The Wind" annually. Then have a round-table discussion based on their positions BEFORE they see the movie as well as how it may have changed or modified their thinking and beliefs AFTERWARDS.

No one, single, individual argument ever solidified my belief that God created us then left us to our intellects to begin to figure out His (or Her) plan than that movie. I firmly believe in God, I firmly believe in Evolution and I firmly believe in God as The Prime, The Unmoved Mover, The Force, The Beginning Without End, The Uncaused Cause, the Alpha And Omega and any other term you want to call The First Force.

Really, when scientists say 'this came first' like hydrogen or the universe being the size of a pinhead, they can't answer the question "Where'd the pinhead material come from?" Why can't they see that whatever matter or force that they describe had to come from somewhere? It didn't just appear out of nothing.

Now, as hard as that might be for some scientists to swallow, they still admit that The Big Bang is just a theory; and not the oldest of Creation of the Universe theories to come along. If they expect us to accept THEIR theory, then they should keep their minds open to the possibility (I say probability) of a God. They can't PROVE their theory, nor can I prove the existence of God. My proffer is this: look at the organization, the beauty, the wonders of creation, the 'natural processes': THAT'S proof of God to me.

But I'm as comfortable dating fossils back millions of years as I am in the pew of a church. And some of the top astronomers have been clerics, priests, etc.

Bottom line: God and science are not mutually exclusive. Period.

  17. Because science threatens their security of the way they have always known things. I threatens their religion  (at least some). If they are in a job that exploits the environment it may threaten their job. If science indicates that way we lead our lifestyles contributes to global warming it is inconvenient to us.

So rather thant to face the facts of science, make changes in their lifestyle, reconcile it with their religion, many turn away from it, declaring it invalid.

    It is a sad situation.

  18. Amen. I am a Christian who happens to believe that evolution and God can coexist. This country's education system is failing us.

  19. the·o·ry

    –noun, plural -ries.

1.a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena:

A theory doesn't need any science behind it, hence the term CONSPIRACY THEORY.

Before you complain about people not understanding a definition, you might want to make sure YOU know the definition.

Like that idiot congressmen (I want to say from Georgia) complaining about the term illegal alien because they aren't from outer space.

    EDIT: Also from my link:

    1. Theory, hypothesis are used in non-technical contexts to mean an untested idea or opinion. A theory in technical use is a more or less verified or established explanation accounting for known facts or phenomena: the theory of relativity. A hypothesis is a conjecture put forth as a possible explanation of phenomena or relations, which serves as a basis of argument or experimentation to reach the truth:

So, in short, if you want to be an arrogant *****, you're correct. If you want to be a normal human being, you're wrong. And believe me, I know the arrogant ***** tendency well. It's very common in my field, information technology. Our tendency to use acronyms and technical jargon is famous. But I digress. :)

  20. What I find amazing is that even after more than two generations of evolution indoctrination in schools, there are still people who recognize evolution as bad science.

Scary to me that so many think that someone looking for a less faith-based science than evolution should be called ignorant.

I don't have enough faith to believe that natural selection can answer for the complexity of life.

  21. what business does this have in elections/political forum ?

  22. Evolution is theory. Here is an example of your "science"

I was watching a program on Discovery or National Geographic. It was about the mating rituals of a species of dinosaurs. They had the male dancing back and forth to attract the female and she backing up rejecting him. Oh wait the big male dino thought, she has a baby so first I must trick her away from the little baby dino and kill it so she will want to breed again!

Big daddy dino is tricking her away when BAM! she trips over a log (according to these scientist she was distracted) giving him the chance to go kill the baby! He grabs baby dino in his mouth and smashes it into a tree!

Wow all this science from some old bones thousands and thousands of year old! Shucks they even tell the behavior of an animal and how they think. This science stuff is truly amazing!

They delivered this "science" bologna as fact! Good lord! There is no more concrete.proof of evolution than there is of God. Personally I believe both. I do believe there are some people that have evolved from apes since they compare their behavior to that of an animal and have a problem rising to that of a human.

  23. "Ignorance" prevails, how else do you think

FAUX fair(?) and balanced(?) news has lasted this long in a society that is supposed to be above the average intelligence level?

  24. It's probably because a large percentage of people using Yahoo Answers are very young- ages 8 to 15, approximately, and therefore have never graduated high school.

  25. I am with you!!

My son is a 15 year old Creationist and he has studied this subject inside and out.  I have learned a lot from him and from our church and pastor.

The American people should be so educated too.

Sarah Palin is also a Creationist and I'm hoping we can see changes in our schools teaching.

  26. The problem is that teaching evolution naturally engenders questions of  the "who created/planned it that way" variety.  To answer "nothing" is a religious view.  The second that answer is given in a public school, it opens the door for all the others who believe that "something" set evolution in motion to be equally heard according to our Constitution.

  27. think twice before u say anything, you might the one who is ignorant about people's knowledge in here, your critics on people's ignorance is not based on anything ,how do you know they don't know what the word theory means, how do you know they dont know why creationism is not a theory,or may be you have asked those questions to one people and he or she didn't know the answers, and you consider that as "the whole public ignorance",beside there is nothing bad about someone not knowing an answer, may be he or she is not interested about science, many people aren't.So think again about that and may be next time you will find a better question to ask.

  28. Unfortunately, there a lot of people that have distorted the teachings of Jesus Christ.  They believe that Bible is a historical text and that everything in actually happened and that God was directly responsible for these actions and the writing of the scripture.

Because these people have this false belief, they discount scientific discovery and in so doing they  discredit the very intelligence that god gave us.

Most of these people are republicans.    And what scares me is that many of these bible thumping clods are in control of the apparatus of the US Government.
