Question:

Why are so many people uninsured?

I admit there was a time that I went uninsured for a while, but it was by choice--I could have had insurance if I was willing to pay for it. Since then, however, I have always had insurance. I've never had it as a benefit, either--I've always paid for it myself. And during times when my income fell below a certain level, I was insured through Medicaid. Whenever my income was barely over the limit to qualify for Medicaid, I made just enough to purchase my own insurance.

I've known a number of people who choose not to buy insurance, because it would be a sacrifice for them and/or they'd rather spend their money on something else.

I wonder what percentage of the uninsured could actually be insured if they really wanted to? And if not, what is stopping them?

It bothers me when I hear people say insurance is only for the rich. I've never been rich. The most I've ever made was $40K with a family of four to support. Health insurance is also available to the poor, and I can testify to that.

  1. Things that are more important than med insurance to the average american:

    Booze

    Cigarettes

    Rims

    Hookers

    Electronic apparatus

The list goes on and on

People who are financially irresponsible tend to be the ones who don't get insured. They are also people who get hit the hardest when they get sick because their broke *** can't pay for the treatment. Just move over here to Canada, socialized medicine since we're practically commies so you are sharing the ER waiting room with homeless people and crack whores.

  2. You have hit on an important point. The actual number of people that are uninsured because they can't afford it is actually far less than what we are being told. Consider these two points. Recent statistics show that approximately 40% of uninsured Americans have a household income of $75 K or better. Another 15-20 % are under 30 years old.

Obviously the first group can afford insurance, and the second group doesn't feel they need it. I am not opposed to the government meeting the needs of those that really need it, but providing health care for everyone is crazy. First off as a country we can't afford it and secondly just look at what has happened in Canada and England. I heard on the radio a couple of weeks ago that one of the individuals that structured the Canadian system admitted that it was a complete disaster.
