Why are so many teams named after birds?

Eagles, Cardinals, Ravens, Falcons, Seahawks

and other 4 legged animals....

Bills, Bengals, Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Broncos, Bears, Lions, Panthers, Rams

and the the humans....

Patriots, Steelers, Titans, Chiefs, Raiders, Cowboys, Giants?, Redskins, Packers, Vikings, Saints, Bucs, 49ers

I can understand most of the birds; most of them are seen as ferocious animals, or just animals of great splendor and honor (Eagles are very highly looked upon in our country). But the Cardinals I don't understand...am I supposed to be intimidated?

OK, first of all, a "Brown" is not a 4 legged animal..... the name came from the teams founder, Paul Brown.  A Texan isn't an animal either. A Texan is, well, a Texan.  Since we're on a roll here, Titans and Giants are really human.  They would fall into the category of "mythological creatures".  Now, since we've become all official and everything, the Packers can't be categorized as human either.  They got their name from a corporate sponser, who bought the team jerseys in their first season in exchange for their name on the jerseys.  The name of the company was Indian Packing Company.  They were actually called the Indians that year, but the press nicknamed them the Packers.  Doesn't history ROCK?

There are a lot of birds in all sports.  But Titans are not humans there GODS.  Giants aren't human there Giants.
