  1. well the companies produce the DVD's in whatever format they want and which they will think people think is best. because they want to produce the type that people will want to buy. Theres really not much difference between them.

  2. Yes the movies are released based on what format the studios have choosen to support. Paramount has agreed earlier this year to only produce HD-DVD for 18-months. They didn't just drop Blu-ray to drop them, they got paid to do so via Microsoft. I have a PS3 and love my Blu-Ray movies. For those that are not in Blu ... well I use upscaling and still enjoy my movies. No harm and no foul. Just sit back and enjoy as always. Don't let the politics get in the way. Buy the format you will enjoy the most ( look at what studios you buy the most from and support that format.) and watch the movies.

  3. Because they are produced by studios that support only one format or the other.

For example, Sony only produce Blu-ray since they are a major player in the format. Paramount decided to drop Blu-ray because they don't like some of the issues re Blu-ray (e.g. use of BD-Java for programming (expensive, clunky), the incomplete and fractionated specification, lack of replication capacity). Warner on the other hand is format neutral and produces in both formats.

Ultimately it's a matter of money (either profit or minimizing cost). Remember that most catalog movies in HD lose money (only the blockbuster titles make money).
