I can look at restaurants at a way that it is just a room to eat. But what is it that some restaurants are all poshened up, very expensive, popular for dates, nights out, and some are very strict on manners and dressing code? it is as if some of these posh restaurants have their own law. The point to my question is, that why is there all this fuss over an eating room. What is the purpose to all this.

  1. The restaurant business is very competitive. In many ways, you are right, they are just rooms to eat. I agree with you too, that they can push it with the pretentiousness.

They are a room, but that room pays the bills, you see. How many people eat there and more importantly, how much each one spends is critical to whether or not a restaurant makes it or breaks it. Many restaurants go for years without turning a profit. They pay the bills, including payroll, but don't make money above and beyond that. That is, if they survive (in the U.S., failure rate is somewhere around 93% in the first year of business.)

Some restaurants can be exclusive because they are so popular, so well written about and regarded, that people will wait months and pay virtually any price to eat there. Others may just be trying to convey this air of exclusivity by creating it with "posh rules".

I went to school for Culinary Arts at one of the best schools in the U.S., but my favorite restaurants are casual ones with GREAT food and service. Eating at a super fancy restaurant can be almost a chore, as people often go there for formal occasions or business affairs. People seem on edge because they are--they are getting ready to meet future in-laws, plunk down a lot of money on a business deal, go on a first date, their pride is on the line. Fancy restaurants recognize this and capitalize on it.

If you want a cozy date, go to a place where you know the food and service are good and the pretension is low. You are far less likely to be disappointed.

  2. i guess it's like reputation? hate to admit but everyone judges.

EXAMPLE; if rude/messy teenagers went to a certain restaurants a lot then mature adults would probably not wanna go.

oh yeah, plus some restaurants are designed to target certain people, right? if you were a snowboarder apparel designer, you'd probably be designing clothes for snowboarders not the average joes.

  3. Some of them are run for rich people who believe that they are royalty like Egyptian Pharaohs, so they must behave as such too.

  4. Well one thing for sure is they dont want their standards to go down know what I mean?

The dress codes is so that the place will have that expensive "vibe" into it.

  5. Obviously, some patrons enjoy a bit of class. I think there should be "adults only" restaurants myself that are open all hours.

  6. Some restuarants believe in quality

  7. most probably for image. if they want to portray they'd be strict on rules. even the way you place your knife and fork matters. table etiquette is essential at such restaurants as they want to attract business from high society people i guess
