For my job I go to a lot of different houses, and on some streets, the houses are numbers in (ex) the 4000's, while on others they are only in the 1-100 range. Why would one street have such smaller street numbers while others have incredibly large numbers?

  1. the city planners begin with a city center and numerically increase addresses outward. thus the farther you are from center the larger the numbers on an address. there are two main streets one going north and south. the other going east and west. these are the dividing lines between North South East and West.
