  1. because it is inexpensive and can last a fairly long time if need be


  2. Sometimes they've been used as temporary cap. if they used for long term then because it is cheaper than gold crowns.

  3. Because the cost is cheaper than other types of metals and stainless steel does not oxidize or erode easily.

  4. because if they were regular steel, they would rust, and then you'd have rust in your mouth which is not a good thing to be swallowing/chewing on

  7. stainless steel crowns can be used for primary (baby teeth) to fill in that space until the permanent tooth erupts.  If that space is not filled it will cause the other teeth to move into that space and more than likely braces will be needed. In adults the caps are used to cover extremely bad cavities, over calcified teeth, after a pulpotomy(removal of pulp in crown part) or pulpectomy(removal of the entire tooth and pulp), and for fractured teeth.
