At my school, there are some students with special needs / (developmental) disabilities that are passed the age of 18 and 19 years of age. I just have to ask why at High Schools are special needs students with physical and mental disabilities the oldest high school students at High School?

  1. The law states that they can attend through age 21. So if they can actually stay until 22.

If they are 21 when the school year begins and turn 22 the next week they can finish out the year.

  2. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the federal govt passed a law stating that children with disabilities can attend school until there 22 years of age.

  3. they can go until their 21... plus most aren't at grade level, so according to law, they go to most appropriate placement until 21... which many times is to stay in school.

  4. These students are often retained in Kindergarten or 1st grade (or both) before they are identified as special needs.  Hence, they are older.

  5. Students in special education are permitted to go to school until their 22nd birthday.  Some of these students may have repeated a grade and that might explain why they are older.  Some are involved in work/study programs and so it takes them longer to complete school because they may only be attending school part of the day.  Some may go to vocational/technical schools and it may take them longer to master the skills they need to obtain a job.

  6. Some special needs people will never actually retain what they are being taught. For many they know the basics that form the routine they need to live a life of they're own. High school for them is different. They are not there to learn quadric equasions, they are there to learn the basics that they can learn, routine and responisbility, dealing with evil people that treat them like c**p/socialization/making friends/feeling like part of the community, and fun. My cousin had a brain tumor at 3 and the chemo caused him to have the mental compasity of a 3 year old. He went to HS and loved it, he was 21-23 when he was forced to "graduate" where he was given an honorary deploma of compleatment at the graduation. Not all is it good for them but it's good for other students to be exposed to illnesses of all kinds. It teaches kindness. Because of my cusin I stuck up for kids with handicaps in school and out. I was even suspended over some football player teasing a kid with downs. I cringe when the manager at Krogers gets short with the downs boy that packs the bags, urrggh I wanted to slap her, but instead I talked to the guy "hey you did a great job, thanks so much for your help, see you next time!".  Because of my dear cousin I'll always know that even people with special needs contribute to society, my cousin was smart in a way few of us understand and have knowlege we never, loving and caring without fear or doubt. My cosin came out of a 13 year remission 2 years ago. He died in his bed in his mother's arms. He said the angels were there a week before he died. I think these people are angels on earth.

I hope that you can help the angels at your school out when you see them in need. Don't let anyone put them down. Imagine how strong they must be to be mocked and put down, even hit, and come to school the next day. Make they're days happier and you'll be happier too.

  7. any student can attend school until through age 21 if tehy haven't graduated-with or without special needs-

it is more prevelant to keep students with special needs until 21 because they need more time to learn as many skills as tehy can..
