I was charged GST and PST for an item I purchased in the US? Is this right?

  1. Unfortunately it is true. This country has a huge problem with pricing. I cannot understand why with the Canadian dollar the way it is, why it costs so much more here on things compared to the states. It sucks because as you found out, it is not worth going to the states anymore to buy things. Combined with the insane gas prices, and then getting hit at the border with those charges, it takes away almost all of the savings.
