  3. The correct answer is that tears are hypotonic, i.e., they have a lower salt concentration than blood.  However, when they come onto the face, some of the water evaporates, concentrating the salt.

  4. Actually, all the fluids of your body are at least a little bit salty. All of them have some salts dissolved in them and always a little of the commonest salt, sodium chloride. (That’s the one that tastes saltiest.) Your blood contains a little less than 1 percent sodium chloride and your tears probably contain almost that much. Just for comparison, seawater contains about 3 percent sodium chloride.

    You are always losing some salt in your urine, so you need a continued intake of salt in your diet. Generally that’s not much of a problem since there is some salt in almost all of the foods you eat. Salt is a common material in all animals and plants.
