Why are the British police ranks not named similar to the army ranks?

IN the US, it is up to the department to establish ranks. Because of the smaller size of most departments, the entire rank structure is not needed.

The other factor is, the military tends to be more top heavy with supervisors. This isn't necessary on a police force, as the lower ranks perform most the services.
