Mrs. Brady wasn't a widow as someone previously suggested.  She was a divorcee.  I don't think this actually came out in the series, but I read about it in "Growing Up Brady; I Was a Teenage Greg" by Barry Williams.  Carol Brady was meant to be a divorcee and Mike Brady was a widower--which does come out in an episode in which Bobby wants to keep a picture of his mother but is afraid it might offend Carol.

Carol Brady was the first divorcee on television, according to Barry Williams.

the process was never talked about, it was just an assumption. behind the scenes, it got ugly... Marcia, Jan and Cindy's real dad was threatening Mike, so he had to get a restraining order
