Why is it so long? Why not two or something? I mean, I guess it could take the athletes a long time to train and get some fresh people in but... it just doesn't really add up, ya know??? explain!?

  1. hmm thats a great question. maybe because they need that much extenstive training with a mixture of getting the events planned as well as the venue themselves. think about it, it must take soo much money to get the official olympics together. maybe it just takes 4 years to put it all together. at let the anticipation is worth it. :)

  2. in ancient Greece.....they held the Olympics every 4 yrs....at that time they were not training equipments....so they took a long time to train......if u r not satisfied....go to google and type "ancient Greece Olympiad"....

  3. FAQ Official website of the Olympic Movement.

Why do the Olympiad take place every four years?

To respect the ancient origins of the Games. At that time, sports competitions were organised in Olympia and were named after their location, i.e. Olympic Games. These Games were held at the same place every four years. This four-year period acquired the name Olympiad, and was used as a date system: time was counted in Olympiads, rather than years.

In 1894, Pierre de Coubertin launched his project to restore the Olympic Games, and in 1896 the first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens.

  4. In ancient Greece, they organized games that were held every 4 years. This 4 year period was called an Olympiad. The Beijing games were the games of the 29th (XXIX) Olympiad, meaning the 29th games since the reintroduction of the games in 1896. Since calling the event... Games of the XXIX Olympiad is a bit cumbersome they are more commonly simply called the Olympic Games.

Personally, I like the 4 year gap between games. If they were held more regularly they would lose a lot of the the hype and the excitement built up as they approach

  5. maybe it gives the host city time to prepare and build the stadium and all the venues it takes alot of time and money

  6. The Greeks made another calendar which had 99 months or 8 years so it was based on that and olympiad means 4 years.

  7. Tradition. Remember, olympics every 2 years if you count winter olympics. If it were less than 4 years, they would be some busy people. And don't think they will have the $ and resource to do so.
