Why are the US Tiger crazy ?

After watching the play-off between Tiger and Rocco. I couldnt understand why about 90% of the crowd wanted woods to win

I was wanting Rocco to win because he seems like a nice funny good guy. Instead of never smiling tiger woods (unless he chips in)

and Tigers won loads of majors etc. Do the US only support woods?

Why is the world Tiger crazy would be a better question.  Tiger personifies to the everyday man like us the qualities which many find attractive.  He's the typical alpha male, who is a champion, dominates his sport, famous, wealthy, has very attractive wife, and respected by many other men and his peers, despite his shortcomings (temper and potty mouth).

he is by far the most supported golfer worldwide.

woods is a nice guy, trust me. and he has a very good character. get on youtube and you will see a lot of videos that show what a nice friendly and funny guy woods actually is. getting back on track, there is a huge divide in the US between the supporters of woods and mickelson. they are both the two golfers to support, and woods is still dominant

It has to do with the media/promotion machine that is Tiger Woods.  It is said that he has done "so much for the game of golf", which I don't think is accurate.  He has done a lot for the PGA tour and a lot for the players on the PGA tour increasing the purses they play for.  But junior golf in the US is way down in participation, and public golf courses are hurting all over the country as there are not enough new players coming in.  He is perhaps the best player of all time (or at least was before this most recent injury), but there were a lot of cheers for Rocco during the US Open playoff, so it is not that everyone only cheers for Woods.

This is very simple to answer. Americans especially, adore winners!!  It doesn't matter which sport or activity one considers. The Chicago Bulls were winners, Michael Jordon was a winner,The Celtics are winners. The Detroit Redwings were winners as were the Yankees and now the Red Sox. So Tiger is the best of the  golfing tribe and a winner. That is why the US is " tiger crazy".
