  1. because it's a "brand" that mainly rich people buy so they can look "cool".

I have a Ryco one and it isn't as fancy looking but it does the job just as good and only cost me $30! (rather than about $80)

If i want to look fashionable while carying my baby i will put a blanket arounder her that matches my outfit. but generally after your a mother, you cant be stuffed with fashion most of the time. you just want to be comfortable!

  2. You're paying for the name.

I got one as a baby gift and returned it. It was too hot and sweaty. My baby just sweated to death in it.

I used a maya wrap instead. Loved it!

  3. branding, baby!

I also used a moby-style wrap that I made (no-sew) from 5 yards of cloth straight from Hancock's.  Cost me a whopping $26 for 3.  Heck yeah.  I used it until my baby was two, and then she just wanted to walk everywhere.  I wore her on my back a LOT.

Oh, the other thing that you're paying for with a Bjorn is the lumbar support.  That is a good thing, but if you use a wrap or Mei Tai carrier, you have back support built right in.

  4. s***w the babybjorn, try the sleepy wrap!! (Just google it). Like the first answerer said, you are just paying for the name. Sleepy wrap is kind of like the moby, but it doesn't lose it's shape and it is very reasonably priced, very comfortable and very versatile. It seems complicated at first, but look it, or the moby,  up on youtube, and you will see how easy it is to use.

  5. We bought ours used for about $25 to $30. They are truly great. Well, the "Active" ones that have lumbar support are great. New they are too expensive. Used, they are a great deal.

Not sure about other brands. I know that ours are real life savers. When the girls go nuts, we can always calm them by strapping them one and walking around.

Knowing that, I'd pay twice the full price for them, just because of its ability to calm them. But maybe other cheaper brands are the same, it's just the carrying, not the product itself.

  6. Brand...like everyone else says.  But they are well made as far as the quality of the buckles and such.  I have one that I got second hand, but I never use it.  I love my baby sling.  I made it with this pattern:

The Bjorn style carriers leave baby's legs and arms dangling, which I think looks wierd, and would feel weird.  My baby likes the snuggled feeling of the pouch, and I can carry her tucked in, or put arms out, or arms and legs out.  I like the versatility.

But the Ergo carriers are supposed to be the best out there as far as long term wearing and comfort.  If you like the straps, buckles, bells and whistles. :)

Personally, I like easy, cute, fast and cheap :)

  7. You are paying for the brand name. But I must admit they are great. They have way more lumbar support than normal carriers.

I got mine from a store which sells used children's clothes. They had a ton of them that looked almost new and cost $30. I just threw it in the washing machine.

That's the way I would go. Over $100 is crazy.

PS- the Baby Bjorn is great for older babies but for a newborn get a wrap. One of those big scary things that looks like one giant piece of material you wrap around you. it's intimidating but after five minutes you'll have it figured out and the baby LOVES being snuggled in.
