  3. My guess would be that they needed to use the water and the river's current for many major things.  

  4. I assume the need for water.  Rivers more so than lakes because rivers aren't stagnant and may decrease the potential for "dirty" water.

  6. Water is the main source of life.  Without it, we would not survive.  So, the ancient cities were built close to any source of water, such as rivers, lakes,etc.  It was used for farming, cooking bathing, washing and of course, for drinking.

    + they used the water for alot of things for cooking  so having a water  near by helped alot some of the major cities today are still near water like london,new york,los angeles and alot more its only with cars and planes that citys can be sucsessful anywhere now

  8. Think about it.  A town near a river has a source of food and water, as well as transportation up and down the river.  The banks of a river are often part of a flood plain, which produces fertile soil, excellent farming, as well as a source of irrigation.

Cities were built on water for several reasons.  One, because humans need water to live.  Settlers were already near the water when they started to build towns.  Two, because water was the most efficient means of travel--you don't need to clear a road, or own and care for a horse.  Also, it allowed for transport of large quantities of goods easily.  Three, because water was used for power for industry--water wheels were used for mills to make flour, for textile mills, etc.
