Why are the engine cooling fans in a 2001 Saturn constantly running?

I have a 2001 Saturn L200. The cooling fans (blowing the radiator and A/C condenser) are constantly running at a high speed. The service engine light also comes on. I disconnected and reconnected the battery and everything was fine until the next day and the same problem happened. This happens as soon as I start the car and lasts until I shut it off. What's the problem and how do I fix it? Could it be a bad relay?

  1. It could be a number of things. One is that your a/c may be on. Your cooling fans will stay on then. Also it could be a relay or a short in it.If you let your car sit over night Then I would be led to believe that it isn't because of over heating.

  2. Are you over heating? Is it hot ouside? how far are you driving. Their are so many possable reasons. I would take it into your local quick lube and have them do a coolant flush. Or you could change your thermostat and see if that helps i would guess a thermostat wouldn't cost more then 20 dollars. Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual also.

  3. more like an engine temperature sensor.

  4. because the americans have never known how to build cars

  5. Are you using the AC all the time ? The fans are suppossed to come on when the AC is on to help pull air across the condenser and radiator. Your High speed fan relay may be stuck also.

  6. could definitely be the relay or thermostat

  7. I would say its time to have it looked at.

  8. the relays are either bad on it or something is shorting them out causing that too happen, usually on those its the relay that causes that too happen,or a sensor,if the coolant sensor goes bad it automatically turns on the relay which operates the fans,it does this as default mode to keep from doing damage to the engine, you need to have it checked to be sure,it may be doing this becasue of a shorted out wire also, good luck with it.

  9. Because it's hot...?
