Why are the families of the candidates involved in the campaigns for presidetial election in the USA?

I don't get it. What have wife and children to do with the political ability of the candidate? Why do they have to "advertize" for them? Why did it develop like that in the US but not in other countries?

Is this controversially discussed in the US or is it just normal for you?

Because your choice of a mate and the apparent psychological good health of your family is very important to those who judge your ability to choose correctly and raise good kids.  If you can't run your life then you can't run my country.
