My professor wanted to know for sure whether identical twins have the same fingerprints, so he called the FBI and asked them, and they said "Nope, the fingerprints of twins are not identical at all. Neither monozygotic twins nor dizygotic twins."

So I want to know what's up with that. If identical twins have identical DNA, then why do they never have the same fingerprints?

  1. cuz thats the way it is

  2. cos thre not!

  3. Fingerprints are based on the patterns of layers of epidermis and the dermis (dermal papillae and epidermal ridges). I believe, this pattern is not determined by genetics, instead it is determined by the pattern in which the cells are layered to form the layers of the skin (epidermis and the dermis).

  4. I could've let you know instead of your prof. calling the fbi.  Every person cannot have the same finger prints.  Just by looking at my fingers and my sisters' they are different.  Believe us, according to some people we are the most alike twins they have ever seen but there are some major differences.

  5. Fingerprints are not determined by DNA. It is assumed it has more to do with the conditions in the placenta.
