Question:

Why are the flights from San Juan to Europe forgotten?

I was told that British Airways, Condor and Martinair had direct flights to London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam from San Juan, but now only Iberia flies directly to Europe. Is that true?

Why did they stop? Any plans to have new European flights in the future?

  1. It's mostly because there was little demand, otherwise they would have kept the routes and raised the prices.  A lot of people don't realise that europeans who travel to the caribbean, generally don't go to Puerto Rico.  The reason is that most of the other islands, especially the smaller ones, are still colonies or former colonies of those countries, so travel is less restrictive.  The euro goes further in St. Martin, than it does in Holland.  British people travel to Barbados and Jamaica, even the Bahamas.  French people travel to St. Martin also, as well as to Haiti or Martenique.  The Dutch travel to St. Martin, Aruba and Curacao.  The only real connection to Europe for Puerto Rico, is Spain, and the Spaniards travel in huge numbers to the Dominican Republic instead, because because it's more economical than PR and also because Spaniard companies own most the all inclusive resorts.  Theres a lot of reasons that caused this, but the ultimate reason is that nobody travels to PR from Europe.

  2. Iberia is the only European airline with scheduled flights. They might be some chartered flights however most European airlines have stopped flying directly to the island mainly due to low profits and also due to the rise of popular tourist destinations such as Punta Cana and Varadero.  Due to these reasons many European airlines simply codeshare on their partner airlines. For example Air France flies to Atlanta and then codeshares with partner Delta on that airline's flights to San Juan.  British Airways flies to New York and from there codeshares with American Airlines on that airline's flights to Puerto Rico.

  3. Because not many Puerto Ricans wanna go to Europe only like 2 out of 10 people wanna go to Europe from PR... so i guess they just shut down that flights so that they aren't wasting money running those planes to PR for nothing
