Question:

Why are the flower heads on my teddy bear sunflowers dried up?

I brought home potted teddy bear sunflower which were blooming when I got home, but three weeks or so later the flower heads are dried up. The rest of the plant seems in very good shape. It is an extremely thirsty plant, and I water it probably every 36 hours. Leaves get droopy if you don't water regular, so you always know when it wants more. Some leaves at the bottom have browned and I have cleaned those off. There also appear to be som every small buds along the stem that look like they might open at some point.

Another weird thing is tha the back of the flower head seems also extremely healthy. At first I thought the flower heads were being affected by the sun so turned them toward the house and they're getting browner by the day.

Do I cut the flower heads off? Plants are about 3 feet high, three stems to the pot.

Thanks!

  1. Deadhead 'em. Blooms don't last forever.

  2. the heads are supposed to dry up so that they can produce seeds. just wait a lil longer and you'll probably have fresh sunflower seeds which can be baked and then eaten!
