I am not advocating the abuse of animals.

You can substitute any attacking animal in place of a bear.

  1. Because you've never met me.

  2. Think about it. It's a human  verus a bear! He's got sharp teeth and claws and people have little hands and teeth.

  3. Well, think about it logically: Assume you had no alternative but to physically fight off an attacking bear... Since we're doing this in a totally hypothetical situation, assume it's a Grizzly... Because of their size, they're incapable of escaping up trees like smaller black bears tend to, so they naturally tend to stand their ground and ward off attackers... Since you're saying it's attacking, it's also more likely to be a female than a male (protective instincts mean that they're going to attack to keep a greater buffer between predators and their young)...

The tendency, for those that follow through with a charge and actually attack, is to attack the head. Some evidence seems to indicate that fighting back seems to prolong the attack... So you've got a 620 pound, 5 foot creature (assuming average female at 38% smaller size than average male at 1,000 pounds, 8 feet tall) driven by an instinct that says you're a threat to her cubs, and you're fighting for your life... So let's assume you've maybe got equal motivation, she's got the body weight to back it up...

It's not entirely impossible, though kicking and punching and standard grappling aren't likely to work... Maybe striking the nose will be enough of a deterrent (Like a dog that's latched on to your arm), but if it's not, you're unlikely to survive... Your best bet is to be armed: pepper spray seems to work well with concentrations of at least 1% capsaicin, but at close range or with a bear's jaws clamping around your head, it might be heard to use. Repeatedly stabbing the throat with a good, long knife would probably be better... Better still would be having a sturdy spear fashioned to halt the charge...

No matter how you look at it, your chances are pretty slim. I wouldn't go picking a fight with a bear.

  4. I nominate this question as absolutey the most nonsense question of 2008

  5. Because they do not exist.

Bears are phisically much bigger, stronger, because they have to be in order to hunt and eat.

  6. If you know the secret bear pressure points you can knock it out with a few light touches.

  7. The same reason so few mentally challenged people are inventors.
