Areas where side branches and leaves develop from are called nodes.   The leaves carry on photosynthesis and their position and shape allow them to absorb the maximum amount of sunlight as possible. The leaf consists of the flattened portion called the blade which is positioned toward the sun during the daylight hours.  Plants position their leaves in one of three basic arrangements: alternate, opposite and whorled.
