I live in Portland, Oregon and the current time is 11:46 AM. Everywhere else in the world it is TWO-DIGITS:46 AM/PM. But in Tehran and in St.Johns Canada the minutes are different. Here it is :46 there it is :16. Very weird. Please help! Thanks!

  1. Right now it is 3:27 EDT in Montreal and 4:57 NDT in St. John's Newfoundland. The reason is that all of the maritime provinces of Canada reside in the Atlantic Time zone, but Newfoundland is actually East of the Atlantic time zone cut off. So it should actually be 2 hours later than Montreal and 1 hour later than Halifax. So in order to coordinate businesses, transportation, etc., Newfoundland adopted the Atlantic Time Zone + 1/2 hour, and called it the Newfoundland Time Zone. I think there are several places in the midwest that also change by only 1/2 an hour, and this is probably the case in Tehran.

  2. The unique Newfoundland time zone exists because of the location of the island and the fact that it was a separate dominion from Canada when the time zones were established around the world.

There is an old joke in Newfoundland...the world will end a half an hour earlier in Newfoundland.
