Why are the numbers for my contact prescription different?

than my glasses prescription.

  1. Your contacts sit at the corneal surface whereas the glasses sit approximately 12 mm in front of your eye.  Prescriptions stronger than +/- 4.00 generally have to be adjusted to compensate for that variation in focal length.
