  1. this is caused when the earths axis turns but it doesn't effect the polar regions. when this happens, the sun still shines brightly at night. this doesn't happen 365 days a year, only about 5 months.

  2. 25.5 degrees

  3. It has to do with the 23.5 degree tilt of the earth's axis.  It's the same reason we have seasons.  In some polar regions, daylight can last months at a time (or night).  In these areas, the sun never drops below the horizon for months, so the sun can be found to shine during what is supposed to be night.

  4. A celestial body can be seen only when the body is above the visible horizon.

For any observer point directly overhead is the zenith and the distance of the horizon from zenith is 90 degrees.

so for a observer at north pole, equator will be the horizon. if a body is located on the equator ( i.e. the declination is 0)then this body will be visible to the obs erver throughout on the horizon. i,e, it will neither set nor rise.

Suns declination ( angle of tilt of the orbit to equator) is abt 23.5 degrees North or south.

So when the declination of the sun is north then sun will be visible to the observer (at north pole)throughout. i.e. 24 hours a day.

sun has northerly declination for 6 months hence the sun does not set for 6 months for a observer at North pole.

when the devlination is southerly similarly the sun cant be seen by same observer for 6 months.

if suns declination is 23.5 degrees south, then a observer at 66.5 north latitude will see sun for 24 hours on the horizon. ie no rising or setting.

thus entire area from 66.5 North to north pole (arctic) and 66.5 degrees south pole to south pole (antartic)this phenomenon of sun above horizon lasts for 6 months.

hence land of midnight sun. as visible at midnight too.
