  1. the USA is world largest Arms dealer, Russia is #2 at about 1/2 of our sales and nearly equal to their defense budget, our defense budget is 9 times theirs, so they offset their spending by sales

  2. Well, first, the highest I could find Russia's economy was #6 on the list.  Here is one site:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cou...

Second, Vladimir Putin appears to be dragging Russia back into the Cold War age, which is very expensive for any country.  Just a few short years ago they were in a state of near bankruptcy, and I don't see how they have overcome that over the past few years even with the rise in the price of crude oil.

It appears that Russia is planning to reclaim all the territory they lost when the Soviet Union broke down.  This will mean wars on several fronts.  War is very expensive.  And as you mentioned, they are spending a lot of money on weapons research, but once the research is done, they still have to pay for the weapons.  Much of their military equipment is in disrepair.  In fact, I suspect anyone buying their old stuff is wasting their money.

A dictatorship is much more expensive than a democracy to maintain.

  3. We sell even our new stuff! The GAO found that the Air Force was designating stuff that hadn't even been delivered yet to be scrapped and yet had more of the same items on future orders. You should see what is available as surplus. The GAO report will give you a headache...but I recommend that most tax- payers give it a shot every now and then. It is our audit and the Government's "grade point average"...

Russia just did what many companies do. They got lean. they divested themselves of many non-productive elements...They did not stop their scientists in their tracks. There is just one difference. They get paid more. They hire talented foreigners to join their teams.

The only difference between the old Russia and the new Russia is MONEY. Something we don't have.

  4. To make room for their new toys.
