  1. st george and the illiwarra clubs combined years ago, st. george being the predominant was chosen as the main drawcard, it sounds better

  2. St George were known as the Saints and the Dragons. In 1999, the Illawarra Steelers were taken over by St George, their new name being St George/Illawarra. If they were called the Saints it was taken as a slur against their merged team whereas the Dragons nickname did not upset anyone's sensitivities (they think).

  3. YEAH YOUR RIGHT THATS F**KED

  4. Naw who cares.. Its a simple team name not a history lesson title.. good work though buddy! good question!

  5. the dragon was slay just like saint george illawarra was slay by other teams.

  6. Yeah, if anything they should have beaten Newcastle to the Knights name. It would have made sense.

  7. its australia don't try to use common sense.

  8. Good point!

Well their shirt, if I am right, has a red 'V' on it like my team St Helens over here! Same style shirt so why not same nickname, Saints?! :o)

  9. Interesting, I had never really thought of that.

Their original name was St George, then people nicknamed them the 'dragon slayers', then they got lazy and called them the dragons!

Perhaps you should start a movement, protest against the crazyness!!

You should support a team with a sensible name - like the Manly Sea Eagles; sea eagles are very manly, except for the girl sea eagles, who aren't.

    Anyhoo....

    Good question.

    *shakes fist at lazy people*
