Why are the shoe treads different?

Question

Specifically netball compared to rugby, or trainers compared to walkers. I know it's to do with friction, and falling over and the terrain you plan to use them on and the grip they provide, but What effect does say a circle on the sole of you shoe have to do with falling off a wall!
