Why are the states in the west bigger than the eastern states?

Why are all the states in the western half of the US bigger than the states in the east?

Because the first Pilgrims landed on the eastern side, and the concentration of people was more on the northeastern side than anywhere else. People divided it that way.

because the western states were still part of mexico until the mid 1800's,the west is also more open country in the east its more congested!
