it looks like they are way more defined than other athletes. What is their training like...or, is it that working on sand really shapes the muscles?

  1. they all use different muscle sets.

swimmers have much bigger(not as toned) muscles and  weight will not really affect them in  that they dont have to run or jump w/ it .lol

volleyball uses quite literally the whole body. core, arms, legs, neck, etc. you have to be able to run/ move quickly(generating power and having less momentum then swimmers) as well as jump.

I heard a statistic that may & walsh practice an average of 8 hrs a day.

gymnastics (for another example) need muscles muscles and flexablity.

i dunno. the sports are just different, and require different skills and bodies.

  2. Fat gives buoyancy, so swimmers probably work fat back into their diets in amounts that will help them float but won't get into their way.

Runners and bicycle riders are also cut--even moreso than volleyball players.
