Why are the words "ambulance" writen backwords on an ambulance?

So that you can read it through your rear-view mirror...

OK, you got the rear view thing, However the reason for this is because in big cities, and/or heavy traffic, the ambulance gets real close to the rear bumper of cars, the driver may not see the ambulance or lights, being so close. so if the driver can hear, and look in the mirror, there it is.

When you look in the rear view mirror while driving your car, you will read "ambulance" correctly. This is why its backwards

When you drive a car and ambulance is behind you. When look at rear view mirror you will see correct reading. If you look direct you will see backward.
