I went to Tysons Corner today (Tysons Corner Center not the Galleria) but I didn't have to time to go to the Galleria part with the upscale stores and I found out there was a Macy's there too. Why are there 2 Macy's literally a short walk away from each other? Also, there were 2 Starbucks about 8 stores away from each other in the mall I went to why is that? Don't two stores close to each other steal each other's customers and waste money for the company?

  1. The company that owns Macy's--Federated, if I recall correctly--has taken over a number of department stores.  It is quite possible that one of the two Macy's you see is one that was taken over.  In many cases, they use one storefront for clothing and accessories and the other for furnishings and housewares.

As for the proximity of the Starbucks, who knows.  On Connecticut Avenue, near Dupont Circle, there's one at the circle and another just a couple of blocks away.  Starbucks tend to be fairly small anyway, with little seating.
