Why are there 2 pace cars ??

Why are there 2 pace cars separating the first half and last half of the field at the beginning of the race? always wondered.

  1. I agree with most of the other answers, that it it used to check pit road speed for the field. And it is easier to split them into two groups, to get a more accurate measurement


  2. The pace cars go at the speed limit for pit road, for whatever track they are at that week.  It is easier for the cars to get a more accurate read on their tachometers if they are closer to the pace car.  That is why they split them up into two groups before the race starts.

  3. The pace cars at the beginning of a race go around at the posted pit road speed limit for the race. The 2nd car is used to get a better judge for drivers who qualified lower in the field.

    After the drivers have gotten the speed in relation to the tachometers in their cars (as NASCAR Race Cars don't have speedometers the 2nd pace car is no longer required or used in the race.

  4. I would tell you if I could tell you but I can't tell you. I have no idea! Does anyone know why they sometimes use a truck instead of a corvette? The corvette pace car is cooler.
