  1. According to most accounts, the rings were adopted by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic Movement) in 1913 after he saw a similar design on an artifact from ancient Greece.  The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.  It is important to emphasize that Pierre de Coubertin never said nor wrote that the colors of the rings were linked with the different continents

  3. For the purposes of the Olympic flag, Europe and Asia are combined as " Eurasia ", and assigned one ring.  Antarctica is not represented since it has no permanent population.

  4. the five current rings represent Asia, Africa, Europe, Americas (meaning North America, South America, and Central) they are represented as one ring, and the last ring represents Oceania (which is Australia and the Polynesian and Micronesian Islands of the Pacific).

The colors of the rings and even the white background of the Olympic flag represent a color from each of the flags of each continent.

  5. No one lives on Antarctica and they count North and South America as being in the same region of the world.
