  1. As far back as I can remember there have been many fires in Greece. I was stuck on a peninsula one year with the fires closing in. I just went out to the beach with only the most necessary of belongings and watched the flames creep over the top of the hills and descending towards the ocean. It was beautifully scary. We made it out okay and noone was hurt.

It gets very hot and dry in Greece and fires get started for different reasons: carelessness, lighting, arson.......no different than anywhere else.

The fires may affect tourism on a very local level very briefly(just like earthquakes), but the Greek people are very resilient. I've never seen the areas of the fires stay affected very long.

It seems that most of the times the fires are not near the biggest tourist areas.
